Millions of travellers across the UK are bracing for significant disruptions this Bank Holiday weekend as roadworks and rail engineering projects threaten to bring major delays.
Roads Set for Gridlock
With an estimated 16 million car journeys expected, key motorways including the M25, M5, and M6 are predicted to experience severe congestion. Roadworks on the M25 between junctions 10 and 11 will reduce capacity by 50%, while similar works on the M6 in the West Midlands are likely to create lengthy queues.
Rail Network Woes
Rail passengers aren't spared either, with Network Rail undertaking 530 engineering projects across the country. Major routes including:
- London to Scotland via the West Coast Mainline
- CrossCountry services between Birmingham and Bristol
- Great Western Railway routes to the South West
will all face cancellations and replacement bus services.
Travel Advice
Transport experts recommend:
- Checking journey planners before travelling
- Avoiding peak times (Friday afternoon and Monday evening)
- Allowing extra time for all journeys
- Considering alternative routes where possible
"This could be one of the most disruptive Bank Holiday weekends we've seen in years," warned motoring organisation RAC's spokesperson.
With sunny weather forecast for much of the country, the combination of good weather and travel disruptions could create the perfect storm for frustrated holidaymakers.
