Liverpool FC's controversial plan to permanently close a section of Anfield Road to cars is recommended for approval by city officials, despite strong local opposition. The decision will be made by the council's planning committee next Tuesday.
Background of the road closure
Part of Anfield Road between Alroy Road and Skerries Road was initially closed in summer 2021 for stadium expansion work, which was completed in 2024. Since then, cars have been barred, though pedestrians and cyclists can use it. The club now seeks to make this closure permanent.
Community backlash
At a tense planning committee last month, councillors criticized the club, with Cllr Billy Marrat accusing Liverpool FC of a "betrayal of trust" to residents. Surveys showed 66% opposed the change in September 2024, rising to 74% in March 2025.
Safety considerations
Council officers say the closure improves highway and ground safety. Merseyside Police noted the club works with counter-terrorism advisors to reduce vulnerabilities, and hostile vehicle mitigation bollards are in place. Building control officials recommend maintaining the closure to reduce collision risk and deliberate targeting.
A site visit will precede the final decision. An application to hold major concerts at Anfield in July is also pending, with both decisions expected together. Liverpool FC declined to comment.
