An American Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles was forced to return to Omaha on Monday after pilots mistakenly believed someone was trying to break into the cockpit. The misunderstanding occurred because the intercom system used for communication between pilots and flight attendants had been accidentally left on, causing static that was misinterpreted as an attempted intrusion.
The flight, operated by SkyWest as American Airlines Flight 6469, departed from Omaha but returned to the airport less than 40 minutes later. An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed the intercom was left on by accident, leading to the confusion.
Video footage captured after the plane's landing shows the captain addressing confused passengers, explaining that the crew needed to investigate a potential issue. Cockpit doors on commercial jets are typically locked and were reinforced following the 11 September 2001 attacks.
The aircraft involved was an Embraer ERJ 175, according to flight-tracking data. The Omaha Airport Authority stated there was no security incident at the airport and directed inquiries to American Airlines.
