The A56 in Lancashire is expected to be closed throughout the night after a car caught fire, according to National Highways. The southbound side of the dual carriageway was shut on Sunday (August 23) near Accrington, between the junctions with the A679 (Huncoat) and the A680 (Rising Bridge).
Emergency resurfacing underway
After the fire was extinguished, crews began emergency road resurfacing, which was expected to take several hours. A National Highways update issued at 2:10am said: "A56 southbound in Accrington between A679 (Huncoat) - A680 (Rising Bridge). The road remains closed for emergency resurfacing following a car fire.
"The road is expected to remain closed throughout the night. There are no delays on the approach."
Impact on commuters
The A56 connects to Bury's M66, a key commuter route from Lancashire to Greater Manchester's M60 orbital motorway, and the cross-Pennine M62. National Highways did not provide an estimated completion time for the work, so it remains unclear if disruption will affect the Monday morning rush hour as commuters head to work in Greater Manchester.
