Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the A1M in West Yorkshire, which has resulted in the motorway being closed in both directions. The closure affects the stretch between Junction 39 at Barnsdale Bar and Junction 41 at Holmfields Interchange, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Traffic Chaos and Emergency Response
National Highways has confirmed that all emergency services are on site, with their traffic officers assisting in managing the situation. Motorists are facing delays of approximately 30 minutes, and diversions have been put in place to reroute traffic around the affected area.
Diversion Routes for Northbound Travel
For road users travelling northbound, a detailed diversion is being followed. Drivers are advised to exit the A1 at Junction 39 via the Barnsdale Bar Junction slip road and proceed onto the A639. After approximately 6 miles, they should turn right onto the A645, continue for about 2 miles, and then turn left onto the A162 southbound entry slip road.
From there, proceed 500 meters to the junction with the M62 at Junction 33. At the roundabout, follow motorway signs to travel eastbound or westbound on the M62, or northbound on the A1(M) via the M62 westbound.
Ongoing Updates and Impact
The incident, described as a "serious collision," has led to widespread traffic chaos, with authorities urging drivers to avoid the area if possible. Updates are being provided regularly, and the closure is expected to remain in place until the scene is cleared and investigations are complete.
