A lorry fire on the A1(M) in South Yorkshire caused severe travel disruption during Friday morning rush hour, with the motorway closed in both directions between junctions 34 and 35. Six fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and emergency services worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control.
National Highways reported at 9am on April 5 that the closure was due to a lorry fire, with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue in attendance. The load repeatedly re-ignited, prolonging the incident. Traffic diversions were put in place, and it was not immediately known whether any injuries occurred.
By later in the day, the burnt-out lorry was moved, and traffic began to be released past the scene. National Highways advised diversions: northbound traffic to follow the hollow circle symbol via the A614 and A638 to the M180 and M18, and southbound traffic to follow the hollow square symbol in reverse order.
The incident comes just weeks after a woman in her 60s suffered life-changing injuries in a separate crash on the A1(M) in Hertfordshire on April 3. In that incident, she fell from a moving vehicle and was taken to hospital.
