From Saturday, August 1, approximately 7.5 million children aged between five and 15 will be eligible for free bus travel on participating local bus services across England. The temporary scheme, part of the Government's Great British Summer Savings programme, runs until August 31 and requires no applications, travel passes, or mobile apps.
How the Scheme Works
Eligible children can simply board participating buses without paying a fare. The initiative aims to ease household budgets during the school holidays. In the North West, major networks such as Bee Network services in Greater Manchester, Arriva Merseyside, Blackpool Transport, Blackburn Bus Company, Burnley Bus Company, and D&G Bus are included. However, some operators have opted out, so passengers are advised to check with their local bus company before travelling.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “We know many hard‑working families are still feeling the squeeze and too often think they have to hold back. By giving every child free bus travel throughout August and cutting tariffs on everyday food items, we’re putting money back into people’s pockets and making life that bit easier. This government is focused on practical steps that help right now — easing pressure on household budgets, supporting parents during the school holidays, and backing British businesses.”
Then-Chancellor Rachel Reeves added: “My number one priority is protecting households from rising costs. This summer I want every family to be able to enjoy themselves, that’s why we’re launching the Great British Summer Savings Scheme, and why we’re helping kids with free bus travel throughout August. As the war in Iran pushes prices up at home, my economic plan is the right one. I will continue to make the right choices, to protect households and businesses, and build a stronger and more secure Britain.”
Exclusions and Other Details
The scheme applies to participating local bus networks in England only. Transport for London (TfL) operates separate arrangements, with children under 11 already travelling free and those aged 11–15 using a Zip Oyster photocard. Long-distance National Express coaches, tourist buses, and private hire vehicles are excluded. Adults are not eligible, but the Government's £3 cap on single bus fares remains in place across England until March next year.
