Motorists are feeling the pinch at the pumps, with unleaded petrol averaging 168.36p per litre and diesel at 183.19p. Amid fears that prices will remain high, drivers are seeking ways to improve fuel economy.
A simple 50p trick could help. Experts advise checking tyre pressure before long journeys. Under-inflated tyres, by as little as 15psi, can increase fuel consumption by six percent. Proper inflation can add 26 miles to a 60-litre tank, according to the RAC.
Most large fuel stations offer tyre pumps for around 50p. Alternatively, drivers can buy an electric pump. Google Maps has also introduced a fuel-efficient route option, showing the most economical path even if it is not the fastest.
Google Maps' feature considers hills, traffic and constant speeds to save fuel. It has already cut 500,000 tonnes of carbon emissions in the US and Canada, and is rolling out to nearly 40 countries.
