More than three million UK drivers admit to driving with an expired licence, according to new research from Confused.com, with over half aware their licence had lapsed when they got behind the wheel.
Penalties and Prosecution
Drivers caught with an out-of-date or incorrect licence face a fine of up to £1,000 and up to six penalty points. Repeat offenders could be banned from driving and prosecuted.
Despite severe consequences, millions say they don't know when their licence expires or how to renew it. Driving licences are valid for 10 years, after which they must be renewed with an up-to-date photo.
DVLA Rules and Renewal
The DVLA states drivers must renew immediately with no grace period. Changes of address, name, or other personal details must also be reported.
The research shows drivers aged 25–34 are the worst offenders for letting licences lapse. Experts warn the offence can have a major impact, with harsher consequences for repeat offenders.

Matt Crole-Rees, motor expert at Confused.com, said: “Driving is part of many people’s everyday life, so it’s important that people are doing so safely and responsibly both behind the wheel and with the correct documentation.”
“It’s concerning to see that many are unaware of the process and even choose to drive with an expired licence. The consequences are severe, so we encourage motorists to check their driving licence at least twice a year to stay on top of any renewal admin.”
Renewal can be done online or at the Post Office, where it carries a charge of up to £21.50 including DVLA fees. Applications sent electronically take about three weeks, while online renewals can arrive in as little as a week.
Crole-Rees added: “Not only do you have to renew after the 10 year mark, but you need to do this when you change your details after any key life events like moving house, changing names, or any other personal details. Remember not to wait until your licence is due to renew it.
