13 Best Shower Heads: From Massaging to Eco Designs

Finding the best shower head for a perfect daily shower can be a challenge. As someone who grew up in a house where we were lucky to get much more than a dribble of water pressure, I’m hugely appreciative of modern showers and the assorted heads you can buy to make showering a more powerful experience. But you still need to pick the right shower head to suit your home’s water system, helping you to get the most out of your shower.

“A good shower head isn’t too big and it’s got multiple settings,” explains Kieron Long, owner of 1st Aylesbury Plumbing & Heating Ltd. “The more options you’ve got the better, so you can adjust it for your personal preferences. The shower head doesn’t give you the power, but a circular shape is better as the water passes through it well.”

With years of experience testing home products, I tried out a huge variety of shower heads to find the best options on the market. Just pair one of our chosen shower heads with one of the best bathroom towels and you can make every shower feel like a spa day.

Mira has been around for more than 100 years, so it’s fair to say the brand knows about showers. I really enjoyed using the Mira crisp, with its nice chunky head that was still lightweight and well balanced on my slightly ancient shower holder. You get four different spray modes to choose from, with the traditional rainwater ‘burst’ probably being the most powerful and invigorating. I also really liked the misting option but did find that this produced quite a lot of drips around the edge of the shower head. An eco spray is meant to save on water use but, to be honest, I couldn’t sense much difference.

There’s a choice of three finishes (chrome, brushed nickel and black) and the 11cm spray face provided excellent body coverage. It’s easy to change modes thanks to a simple push button and it’s easy to clean, although, if I was being particularly picky, I would have liked slightly more protruding nozzles to make it easier to flick limescale off, although they are rub clean.

Little secret, this was the shower head I already owned. I’ve been using it happily for several years in a hard water area. I love the five spray options, which mean you can adjust the shower head from a powerful rain-style spray all the way through to a concentrated jet, with a simple plastic slide switch that clicks each time the spray is adjusted.

It’s also incredibly easy to clean, with rub-clean nozzles and a removable spray plate so you can really get any limescale build-up out of the head. It isn’t quite as powerful as the Mira above and there’s only a chrome option but, for the price, it’s an impressive shower head.
