A test train struck a group of maintenance workers outside Luoyangzhen Station in Kunming, China, killing 11 and injuring two in the country's worst rail crash in over a decade.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when train No. 55537, which was being used to check seismic equipment, entered a curved section of the railway line and hit the workers, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Railway and local authorities launched emergency rescue efforts, and the injured were taken to hospital. The station has since resumed normal services, and Kunming's railway authority expressed condolences to the victims' families on social media.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. China has the world's largest rail network, stretching over 100,000 miles. In 2021, nine people were killed when a train struck workers on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway in Gansu province.
