Sri Lanka Unveils World's Largest Purple Star Sapphire: A $300 Million Marvel
World's Largest Purple Star Sapphire Found in Sri Lanka

In a dazzling revelation from the heart of the gem trade, Sri Lanka has presented a colossal purple star sapphire believed to be the largest of its kind ever documented. The monumental stone, weighing an astonishing 3,563 carats, was unveiled to the public in the nation's capital on Saturday 17 January 2026.

The 'Star of Pure Land': A Gemological Giant

Christened the "Star of Pure Land," the polished, round-shaped sapphire is owned by a group calling itself the Star of Pure Land Team, who have chosen to remain anonymous for security reasons. Consultant gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe confirmed the stone's extraordinary status, stating it is the world's largest documented natural purple star sapphire.

"This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind," Amarasinghe told assembled media. He highlighted the gem's exceptional quality, noting it "shows a well-defined asterism. It has six rays asterism. That's something special out of all the other stones." This star-like optical phenomenon is what gives star sapphires their unique and coveted appearance.

A Remarkable Discovery and a Staggering Valuation

The sapphire's journey began in 2023 when it was reportedly discovered in a gem pit near Rathnapura, a remote town famed as Sri Lanka's "city of gems." One of the owners explained that the stone was purchased alongside other gems that year, but its true significance was only realised about two years later. The team subsequently had it certified by two independent laboratories.

International valuers have placed an eye-watering estimate on the precious find. According to Amarasinghe, the stone's value has been appraised at between $300 million and $400 million. The owners have expressed their readiness to sell this unparalleled treasure.

A Testament to Sri Lanka's Gem Heritage

This record-breaking discovery underscores Sri Lanka's enduring reputation as a global hub for exceptional gemstones. The island's sapphires are renowned worldwide for their unique colour, exceptional clarity, and captivating shimmer. The unveiling of the "Star of Pure Land" not only sets a new benchmark in gemology but also reinforces the nation's rich geological heritage and its central role in the international gem market.
