World's Largest Capsule Hotel Opens in London: A Night in a Box

The world's largest capsule hotel has opened in the heart of London, offering nearly 1,000 pods at rates starting from just £30. Located near Piccadilly Circus, the Zedwell Capsule Hotel provides a budget alternative to nearby luxury hotels like The Ritz, where rooms can cost upwards of £1,100.

A reporter from The Mirror spent a night at the hotel and found the experience both novel and challenging. The hotel's dark grey colour scheme and lack of windows gave it a dystopian feel, reminiscent of the film Blade Runner. The capsules, measuring 220cm long, 100cm wide, and 100cm high, offer just enough space to sit up in. Each pod comes with a socket, light, mirror, and an overhead fan described as a 'smart climate control' system.

Guests sleep in dormitories ranging from eight to 100 capsules, with female-only options available. The capsules are stacked two high, and access is via a roll-up shutter similar to an office cabinet. Shared toilet and shower facilities are located down the corridor. The reporter made the mistake of forgetting his room card twice, which proved awkward.

Despite the compact space, the hotel boasts Hypnos mattresses and Egyptian cotton bedding, which contributed to a good night's sleep. However, the reporter noted that waking up in pitch darkness made him eager to see daylight. The hotel was busy with business travellers, suggesting the concept may capture the imagination of many, though it is not for everyone.
