World's First Pokémon-Themed Airport to Open in Japan This Summer
World's First Pokémon Airport Opening in Japan

The world's first Pokémon-themed airport is set to open in Japan this summer, as part of efforts to support children affected by a devastating earthquake two years ago. The regional Noto Satoyama airport in Ishikawa Prefecture will be rebranded as "Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport" on July 7.

Collaboration with Pokémon With You Foundation

The initiative is a collaboration with the Pokémon With You Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting children impacted by the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, which left hundreds dead or missing. The airport's transformation aims to bring cheer to survivors and promote tourism in the region.

Renovations and Decorations

The second-floor atrium will be adorned with characters from the popular franchise, including a large balloon featuring Pikachu, one of the most iconic figures from the series. The entire airport grounds will be decorated with all 111 "Flying-type" Pokémon characters for visitors to spot and enjoy.

On the first floor, the arrival lobby will feature a large mural titled "A Bright Future," created in 2024 to support the reconstruction of Noto. The artwork depicts Pokémon characters Pikachu, Plusle, and Minun, which will also appear as three-dimensional statues in the lobby. The observation deck has been decorated with Pikachu designs on walls and pillars, while the airport's exterior, entrances, exits, information signs, and boarding bridges will all feature Pokémon characters.

Pokémon-Themed Dining and Shopping

The Pokémon theme extends beyond decorations. The airport's restaurant, Annon, will introduce Pokémon-themed pancakes and drinks, while Serenpitiy, a shop on the second floor, will sell original merchandise. Additionally, Pokémon-wrapped buses will offer sightseeing tours from the airport, stopping at franchise-related spots on the Noto Peninsula, including the Wakura Pokémon Footbath in Nanao City and a monument based on the Sylveon character in Suzu City.

Tourism Boost and Future Plans

The airport's new theme, which will remain in place until at least September 2029, aims to spread joy among earthquake survivors and establish Noto as a tourist destination for Pokémon fans. The project hopes to increase visitor numbers by creating stronger tourism demand. Currently, the small regional airport operates only four flights daily—two arrivals and two departures—between Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

Aside from its new Pokémon association, the Noto Peninsula is known for its coastal landscapes, hot springs, and rural communities. More Pokémon-themed spots and sightseeing opportunities are expected to be announced ahead of the July unveiling.
