Whitstable: A Charming UK Seaside Town with a Thriving High Street

Whitstable, a picturesque seaside town in Kent, offers a vibrant high street filled with artisan cafés, independent boutiques, and artist studios, making it a perfect day out even on cloudy days.

A High Street Full of Character

Journalist Chanelle Georgina visited Whitstable with her sister on a cloudy August day and began with a stroll down the impressive high street. They enjoyed brunch at Grain and Hearth, where they had two delicious sandwiches: a BLT for Chanelle and a halloumi sandwich for her sister.

The high street is lined with independent shops, artist workshops, and clothing stores. One favorite was The Lauren Rogers-Martin Studio, which was packed with original artworks, homewares, and scented candles. While browsing, fine art illustrator Lauren was working on a new commission as visitors perused her works.

Seafront Charm and Oyster Traditions

As the sun broke through the clouds, Chanelle and her sister headed to the seafront to admire the pastel-colored houses and the boat-lined shingle beach. The pastel beach huts housed gift shops, coffee bars, and artist studios.

Of course, being Whitstable, there were plenty of oysters, but Chanelle decided against indulging. She explained: "There's an old saying that oysters should only be enjoyed in the months ending with an 'r' — such as September, October, and November — for optimal freshness."

She suggests oyster lovers return during the Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival, scheduled for the weekend of September 11. The event features three days of live music, exceptional food, mud-slinging competitions, pirate pottery, chalk art, and treasure hunts.
