Welsh town named 'most beautiful place in the UK' - not Portmeirion

A beloved Welsh town has been crowned the 'most beautiful place in the UK'. Tenby, nestled along the 186-mile Pembrokeshire coastline, has been named the 'most beautiful place in the UK to visit in 2026' by Time Out. The publication described it as a "halcyon dream of the Great British Seaside".

Charming town

Tenby is characterised by its unspoilt stretches of golden coastline, a postcard-perfect harbour backed by colourful townhouses, and a thriving independent scene. The town has a maze of narrow cobbled lanes, shimmering fairy lights that "snake through the centre" and well-preserved 13th-century medieval walls, which are said to be among the best in the UK.

There's an abundance of seaside cafés, bars and restaurants for al fresco dining during the warmer months, along with spots to pick up the quintessential traditional fish and chips. Elsewhere, there are plenty of independent and unique shops to explore in the winding cobblestoned lanes, which are pedestrian-only during the summer months. There are plenty of walking routes to soak up the town's scenic vistas, along with a variety of B&B's, hotels, and self-catering apartments.

Time Out recommended: "Tenby’s handsome appeal draws big crowds, particularly in the summer, but that popularity has given rise to an exciting food scene. Grab a Welsh cake hot off the griddle at Loafley; head to The Mews on Upper Frog Street for wine bars and small plates; and head to The Baytree for local grub, including freshly caught mackerel and lobster."

Award-winning beaches

Tenby Castle Beach was previously crowned 'UK's Beach of the Year' by The Sunday Times, thanks to its soft golden sand, gentle blue waves, St Catherine's Island, and ancient castle remains. Tenby South Beach holds the Blue Flag Award and is one of the largest beaches in Tenby, with expanses of golden sand, backed by rolling sand dunes with panoramic views of Caldey Island. Tenby North Beach is another standout, with its pastel-coloured harbour with picturesque vistas of Goscar Rock, complemented by its crystal-clear waters. Harbour Beach, a compact sandy inlet, has widely been recognised as one of the best in Europe.

Travellers have repeatedly hailed Tenby for its near-perfect scenes. "Most beautiful location in Wales, maybe even the UK. This town is the most beautiful seaside town I’ve ever seen worldwide," one visitor hailed on TripAdvisor. A second commented: "Beyond beautiful on a sunny day. Tenby was a total gem to come upon. Beautiful place & beaches, lovely place to stroll, have a coffee and just relax." One holidaymaker even compared Tenby to the Mediterranean, noting: "In the summer season, Tenby beach is just like a beach in Spain. Perfect place to visit if you do not want to travel abroad. Everyone should visit Tenby just once in a lifetime."
