Whitstable's Tankerton Beach has been named the cheapest beach to visit from London this summer, with return train tickets averaging £24.50, according to new research by student accommodation provider Chapter.
How the rankings were determined
Chapter compared train ticket costs from London to various beaches, alongside beach ratings, average summer temperatures, water quality scores, and travel times. Tankerton Beach scored 4.4 out of five for beach quality, with 'excellent' water quality and average summer temperatures of 17°C, reaching highs above 20°C in peak season. The journey from London takes approximately 1 hour 56 minutes.
UK Google searches for 'beach trip from London' have surged 600% in the last three months, making the findings timely for families planning summer holidays.
Top three cheapest beaches
Whitstable Tankerton Beach and Whitstable Beach jointly top the list as the most affordable, with a return ticket costing £24.50. Southend-on-Sea Beach ranks second with an average return ticket of £28.60 and a travel time of 95 minutes. Whitstable Beach comes third, with a 4.5 rating and the same £24.50 return fare, though the journey takes 117 minutes.
Visitors to Tankerton Beach praised it on Tripadvisor, with one writing: "Such a beautiful, tranquil place to visit. Good for the soul. Sailing boats, sea birds, people walking their dogs. Everyone saying good morning. Heaven." Another said: "Such a tranquil and stunning place to chill. There are benches on the slopes if you fancy enjoying the sights, sea birds, and boats. Plus everyone greets each other!"
A Google review of Southend-on-Sea Beach noted: "Ocean, and cool sea breeze made the whole place feel so relaxing. I loved the fun rides and games around the beach area, which added such a lively vibe, and there were plenty of nice restaurants nearby to enjoy good food with a sea view."
Whitstable Beach received a Google review stating: "I sat on the many rocks along the beach since there isn't much sand, and enjoyed an amazing view looking out over the water. It's a peaceful spot perfect for relaxing and taking in the natural beauty."
