Footage has emerged of tourists racing to secure sunbeds at a resort in Lanzarote, with some queuing from 8am before breaking into a sprint when the pool area opened. The incident at the Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort captured holidaymakers throwing aside rope barriers to reach loungers first.
Onlooker Isabelle Hanssen, who recorded the scenes, said Brits and Germans had lined up for beds the day before. Despite the rush, she confirmed there were enough sunbeds for all guests at the hotel. “Nothing like the 9:30am sunbed sprint to start your relaxing holiday,” she told Luxury Travel Daily.
The chaotic dash drew criticism online, with one commenter stating: “Faith in humanity destroyed,” while another described the scene as “Clampits on tour.” Others who had stayed at the same hotel said they had never witnessed such behaviour before.
Similar scenes were reported earlier this week in Benidorm, where holidaymakers at the Hotel Rosamar queued for half an hour before frantically grabbing poolside spots. Witness Mark Gregory from Swansea described the 10am dash as “comical,” noting around 50 to 60 people, mostly British, were waiting.
Gregory, who prefers to avoid the “sunbed wars,” said: “When it comes to people reserving sunbeds with their towels, it's an age-old problem … I understand why they do it, but it's the ones who chuck their towels down at 8am and don't turn up till the afternoon that's the problem.”
