The best place to visit in the UK has been named as an historic destination right here in Scotland - and no, it’s not Edinburgh.
There’s a vast array of scenic hotspots dotted throughout the UK, with the diversity of sites on offer a true marvel to behold. There’s the serene glacial lakes and fells of the famed Lake District, the towering heights of Eryri/Snowdonia in Wales, the historic Mourne Wall in northern Ireland, the rolling hills of the countryside, quaint coastal towns, pretty villages all around the nation, and much more.
There’s plenty to see and do throughout the UK - so much, in fact, that it can be tricky choosing where to go for a so-called “staycation” or day out.
With that in mind, Time Out has issued a round-up of “the best places to go in the UK in 2026” - and a Scottish destination claimed the top spot.
The Legendary City of Stirling
So, where is it? The legendary city of Stirling, of course. Found in central Scotland, it’s an interesting and picturesque destination famed for its extensive history.
It’s flanked by vast stretches of rich farmland, boasts a medieval old town, as well as the impressive architectural gem, Stirling Castle, which sits on top of a craggy volcanic rock.
The city’s Old Bridge and port all tie in to its rich history, with other historic sites including the National Wallace Monument, a 19th-century tower at the summit of the Abbey Craig, and Stirling Old Town Jail serving as further insight into the city’s long, varied past.
History Buffs Will Be in Their Element
History buffs will truly be in their element, especially those who choose to embark on the Bannockburn Experience which, according to Your Stirling, utilises “cutting-edge technology” to bring “the 14th century battle to life for 21st century audiences”. Guests can “see the actual battlefield where it all happened more than 700 years ago”.
Stirling has also been named the coolest city in Scotland.
More to See and Do
There’s plenty more to see and do in Stirling. It’s renowned for being a compact, walkable city and is often branded the “Heart of Scotland”.
Of visiting this year in particular, Time Out said: “For those partial to a tipple, Stirling Distillery (the city’s first ever distillery) will release its first batch of Stirling whisky in late 2026, and independent venues will celebrate Stirling Cocktail Week with serious food and drinks deals all over the city.”
This year also marked the grand finale of the city’s 900th anniversary celebrations, which had been “ongoing since 2024” but came to an end with a Culture Night of music, dance, comedy and more at Stirling Castle.
Time Out was also keen to highlight another reason to visit Stirling: “The launch of an affordable direct train service from London that will make the city cheaper, easier and more accessible to get to than ever.
Stirling wasn’t the sole Scottish entry in the round up, though. Other entries on the list include, unsurprisingly, Edinburgh, which came in fourth place, and Caithness - found at the very top of mainland Scotland - in sixth place.
