Simon Calder Names 3 Very Cheap Summer 2026 Destinations
Simon Calder's 3 Cheap Summer 2026 Destinations

Travel expert Simon Calder has named three gorgeous European destinations to visit in summer 2026 that are both stunning and inexpensive. The three places — Montenegro, Portugal, and Bulgaria — offer a range of stunning scenery, culture, and activities.

Montenegro: A Jewel of the Mediterranean

Simon Calder highlighted Montenegro as an exceptionally picturesque yet overlooked European nation, boasting a magnificent coastline, national parks, and historic medieval settlements. Montenegro also ranks among Europe's most affordable destinations, based on recent research by Jersey Island Holidays.

The most sought-after holiday location is Kotor Bay, characterized as "a jewel of the Mediterranean," brimming with delightful fishing villages and spectacular vistas. On Tripadvisor, a visitor described Kotor as among the "nicest places" they've ever encountered. Another remarked: "The bay is gorgeous with hills and mountains surrounding it. There are plenty of viewpoints to see it. The towns also look pretty with the red tiled roofs."

A further tourist noted: "What a spectacular scene. Kotor Bay is winding and resembles a fjord. It is located in the Adriatic Sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The natural beauty is stunning, with Mediterranean landscapes, mountains, and cliffs in contrast with the historic buildings."

Portugal: Vibrant Towns and Exquisite Shoreline

While being a more favoured summer holiday spot, Portugal remains a striking country featuring vibrant towns and an exquisite shoreline. Simon Calder suggests Lisbon, alongside the towns of Cascais, Estoril, and Sintra.

He remarked: "I love Lisbon, one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, and the locations on its western flanks - in particular Cascais, Estoril and Sintra. But until now I haven't strayed south to the Setubal Peninsula: much less well known, but full of surprises."

Simon recommends the capital city of Lisbon, adding: "Do try O Barbas - an amazing seafood restaurant overlooking the Atlantic in Costa da Caparica; the wild, windy and atmospheric cape of Espichel; and Setubal itself, a sleepy, friendly city."

Bulgaria: Undiscovered Treasure Where Money Goes Further

Bulgaria is another undiscovered treasure and a location where "your money goes further," according to Simon. He said: "We've been telling everyone for years that Bulgaria is a great holiday destination, about how wonderful the weather is, how soft the sandy beaches are, the excellent hotels and of course the low cost of living there."

These three destinations offer travellers affordable options for a memorable summer 2026 holiday, combining natural beauty, cultural richness, and value for money.
