Folkestone has been named one of the UK's best coastal destinations, beating better-known neighbours like Margate, Whitstable and Brighton. The historic town, nestled in a valley between two cliffs on the southern edge of the North Downs, secured fourth place on a list of must-visit coastal spots for 2026 compiled by Time Out.
At the heart of Folkestone lies the Creative Quarter, a thriving cultural hub overseen by the arts charity Creative Folkestone. The charity has restored over 90 buildings to house independent studios, cafés and businesses, all focused on creativity. The district's winding streets and rainbow-hued shopfronts make it instantly recognisable and a magnet for visitors.
One first-time visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: "Today was my first visit to Folkestone, and we wanted to visit the Creative Quarter. Was not disappointed. Fabulous sunny day, helps, of course. Cobble streets and set on a hill. So might not be great for some. Wonderful galleries and fabulous eateries. Quirky shops and friendly people. I will visit again."
The Harbour Arm, once the railway terminal for the Folkestone-Boulogne Ferry and a departure point for troops heading to the Western Front, has been transformed into a destination for drinks, dining and live entertainment. It now hosts over 70 independent food, drink and retail vendors. Another visitor commented: "Folkestone Harbour Arm has been transformed into a remarkable destination – a vibrant blend of artistic flair, seaside heritage, and excellent food."
For beachgoers, Sunny Sands is the most popular spot, with fine sand ideal for sandcastles and sunbathing, plus facilities for water sports. Located beside the harbour, it is among the nearest beaches to London, within an hour's travel from the capital, and frequently becomes a destination for Londoners seeking coastal air. Parking is available at the Harbour Arm Car Park, though it fills up quickly during the holiday season.
One tourist summed up the appeal: "Beautiful beach, lovely day out. Fabulous views and scenery. Great for all ages. Lots to see and do. Very clean beach, worth a visit."
