Travel specialists at WorldAtlas have named seven of Scotland's friendliest towns to retire, highlighting picturesque locations across the country. Among them, the coastal town of Montrose in Angus was described as a "dream come true for most retirees".
The list, published on Thursday, September 3, focuses on places with friendly locals where retirees can meet new people and make friends after finishing their working life.
Montrose and Peebles praised
Montrose, situated 28 miles north of Dundee and 37 miles south of Aberdeen, is known for one of the country's widest high streets and a large selection of shops. WorldAtlas praised its attractions, including the Montrose Air Station Museum and Montrose Beach. The museum became the first operational military air station in Britain when it was created in 1913, while the beach stretches for three miles of golden sands.
WorldAtlas wrote: "Montrose is a dream come true for most retirees, with something for nearly anyone. Those who enjoy history and museums will find several in town, including the Montrose Air Station Museum. The museum tells the story of the first operational air station in Great Britain right in Montrose."
Peebles in the Scottish Borders, less than an hour from Edinburgh by car, was also included. The historic market town is renowned for its scenery, shopping, and year-round events. WorldAtlas singled out the Kailzie Estate botanical garden and the Moy Mackay art gallery as key attractions.
North Berwick and the full list
North Berwick in East Lothian was another destination named among the friendliest. The seaside town offers scenic beaches, shops, cafés, restaurants, and world-renowned golf courses. Milsey Bay Beach was highlighted as "excellent for a day soaking up the sun, reading a book, or doing some swimming", with the North Berwick Golf Club and Glen Golf Club also praised.
