After qualifying for their first World Cup since 1998, the next challenge for Scotland is to make it through the group stages for the first time when they kick off their campaign in the US next week.
Steve Clarke’s side have reached the finals nine times, including five consecutive tournaments from 1974 to 1990, but they are still looking to reach the knock-out stages for the first time after missing out on goal difference three times.
If we take a look at Scotland’s World Cup odds, they are currently 300/1 with betting sites to win the tournament but just 1/4 to progress through the group stage.
They suffered a huge blow to their preparations at the weekend when midfielder Billy Gilmour was ruled out with a knee injury, suffered in the 4-1 friendly win over Curacao at Hampden Park.
He’s been replaced in the squad by Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher, who has played just 17 minutes of first-team football for United.
The 19-year-old made his international debut at the weekend as a half-time replacement for Gilmour and did enough to earn his place on the plane.
Progressing from Group C isn’t going to be easy, though, up against Brazil, Morocco and Haiti. Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil side have won the tournament five times before, while Morocco reached the semi-finals of the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Their biggest hope will be a convincing win over Haiti to take one of the best third-placed team spots.

In most other groups, I would back Scotland to do enough to reach the knock-out stage but it’s hard to see them getting anything against Morocco or Brazil.
That means all the pressure will be on their fixture with Haiti, and that just happens to be their opening game, which gives them no margin for error.
If they were opening up their campaign against either of the other two teams, they would at least have a chance to settle into the tournament, but instead, their first game is the one they have to win.

McGinn to finish as Scotland’s top scorer - 8/1 William Hill
Goals have often been the issue with the Scotland side, with no real world-class striker in the squad, but one thing you do know you’ll get with Clarke’s side is effort.
With Scott McTominay and John McGinn in the squad, you also always have the chance of goals against the run of play, with the former the favourite with the betting apps to finish as Scotland’s leading scorer.
The pair have real quality, and in McGinn they have a player who has hit form just at the right time, with three goals in his last five games as Villa finished fourth in the Premier League table and won the Europa League.
He finished the season with 10 goals, but you have to go back to November 2024 for his last Scotland goals, when he scored in back-to-back wins over Croatia and Poland. If his side are to progress, then they need McGinn on top of his game.
