Alexia Putellas, the two-time Ballon d'Or winner, is set to leave Barcelona at the end of the season, with London City Lionesses emerging as a potential destination for the decorated midfielder. The 32-year-old Barcelona captain announced her departure after leading the club to their fourth Champions League title in six seasons, defeating Lyon 4-0 in the final in Oslo.
Putellas Ends 14-Year Barcelona Association
Putellas confirmed that her contract expiration will mark the end of her 14-year tenure with Barcelona. Her final appearance will be on Wednesday in a Liga F match against Real Sociedad. In an emotional Instagram post, she stated: "The moment has come to admit that I have given everything for the club with daily discipline and obsession in pursuit of constant improvement for 14 years. I have always said that this jersey cannot be defended halfway, and I admit that I have emptied myself. That is why I wanted to tell you that this Wednesday will be my last match as a player for FC Barcelona. I always said I wanted my final moment to come while I was at my very best, giving everything and with 100 per cent energy."
London City Lionesses in the Race
London City Lionesses, who finished sixth in their debut Women's Super League season, are reportedly keen on signing Putellas, who also won the 2023 World Cup with Spain. Club sources did not deny interest, though they face strong competition from Paris St Germain and clubs in the United States. Securing Putellas would be a major statement for London City as they look to establish themselves in the top flight.
