A new study has revealed that a significant number of pet owners are forgoing international travel due to insufficient pet-friendly accommodations. The research, which surveyed 2,000 cat and dog owners, found that 26% are avoiding trips abroad in favor of staying in the UK so they can bring their pets along. This trend has prompted the opening of 'Pet Set Go', Britain’s first pop-up travel agency for pets, located in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.
Pet-Centric Holiday Planning
The study, commissioned by pet food maker Carnilove, indicates that half of pet owners plan their entire holiday around their furry friends. More than half (54%) holiday with their pets because they enjoy their company, while 39% feel happier knowing they have provided their animal with a new experience. When searching for accommodation, 33% look for pet-friendly pubs and restaurants nearby, and 30% consider the journey's length.
Challenges and Solutions
A third of owners reported having to change or cancel a holiday due to a lack of pet-friendly options. The biggest challenges include limited choices for dining and restrictions on beaches, walks, or attractions. Nearly four in ten (38%) would be more likely to book a pet-inclusive holiday if there were no additional animal fees. Trusted reviews from other owners (34%) and access to pet-friendly activities (26%) are also crucial factors.
In response, Carnilove opened 'Pet Set Go' at 21 West Street, Chipping Norton, open until June 4th at 5pm, offering tips and advice on traveling with animals. Online resources include five travel guides and expert advice.
Expert Insights
Cara Whitehouse, a pet travel expert, noted a massive shift in the UK towards furry friend-friendly holidays. 'Pet parents no longer want a holiday where their pet is just tolerated; they’re now at the heart of the adventure,' she said. 'By uncovering hidden gem locations from Anglesey’s dunes to the Cairngorms’ plateaus, we help owners match destinations to their pet’s unique character.'
Colin Rodger, managing director at Carnilove, added: 'We launched the agency because an active, adventurous life is a necessity for pets to ignite their true spirit. Our research shows owners are willing to go the extra mile to include their pets, but every expedition requires the right fuel.'
Top UK Destinations and Wellness Benefits
Among those planning a UK holiday with their pet this summer, the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and Cornwall are top-rated destinations. The study also found that 54% said holidaying with their pet gives both a wellness boost. A third noticed their animal’s mood improved for weeks after returning home, and 30% observed more 'vitality' or 'spirit' in their pet.
Izzy Judd, a brand partner, shared: 'Our home is busy with three children, but our pets are a huge part of our family. The best way to reset is to take a trip together. Fuelling our pets with the right nutrition and taking them on family holidays makes all the difference in creating special core memories.'
