Passengers on MSC Cruises' first Alaska sailings this summer will have the chance to learn how to spot and track whales, thanks to a partnership with conservation charity ORCA. The cruise line has appointed a dedicated Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) to sail aboard the MSC Poesia for one month during peak whale season, from late July through late August 2026.
The MMO will help guests study whale behaviour and collect data on marine life reactions to cruise vessels. This information will be shared with the scientific community and used to enhance whale avoidance training for deck crew across the industry.
Drawing on ORCA's expertise in responsible whale-watching, the organisation will also review current whale-watching excursions to ensure they meet best practices. Linden Coppell, vice president of sustainability at MSC Cruises, said the partnership reflects a proactive, science-led approach to operating in an environmentally sensitive region.
Steve Jones, chief operating officer at ORCA, noted that the cruise industry has a meaningful role in protecting whales, and praised MSC Cruises for embedding conservation into its programme. The inaugural Alaska season begins in May 2026 aboard the revamped MSC Poesia, with fares starting from £657 per person.
