Passengers embarking on MSC Cruises' inaugural Alaska voyages this summer will have a unique opportunity to learn how to spot and track whales, thanks to a dedicated expert onboard. The cruise line is partnering with the conservation charity ORCA to provide a Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) during its debut season in the region.
Expert Guidance and Data Collection
The MMO will sail aboard the MSC Poesia for one month, from late July through late August 2026, coinciding with the peak whale season. This initiative allows guests to study whale behaviour in real-time and assist in collecting valuable data, including how marine life reacts to the presence of cruise vessels.
The information gathered will be shared with the scientific community and will inform whale avoidance training programs that ORCA provides to deck crews across multiple cruise lines and shipping companies.
Commitment to Sustainability
Linden Coppell, vice president of sustainability at MSC Cruises, emphasized the importance of a science-led approach. "As we prepare for our inaugural season in Alaska, it was crucial for us to take proactive steps in one of the world's most environmentally sensitive regions," she said.
"Partnering with ORCA enables us to combine expert research, enhanced crew training, and meaningful guest engagement to better understand vessel-whale interactions and reduce risks. This collaboration underscores our broader commitment to protecting marine biodiversity while evolving responsible industry practices."
ORCA's Role and Industry Impact
ORCA, which works with other cruise lines such as Ambassador, Saga, and Fred Olsen, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Steve Jones, chief operating officer at ORCA, highlighted the cruise industry's potential in conservation efforts.
"MSC Cruises is demonstrating a commitment to going above and beyond by embedding conservation into their summer programme. We're proud to help make their debut Alaskan season an unforgettable experience for guests," he stated.
Drawing on ORCA's expertise in responsible whale-watching, the organisation will also offer support and guidance on Alaska destination experiences, including reviewing current whale-watching excursions.
