Matt Baker's Mum Emotional Over Farm's Future After Accident
Janice Baker, the mother of former Countryfile presenter Matt Baker, broke down in tears during a family discussion about the future of their Durham sheep farm. The emotional moment was captured in a repeat episode of Channel 4's series Our Farm in the Dales, which aired recently, highlighting the challenges facing the family business.
Family Gathers to Discuss Farm's Survival
Matt Baker, accompanied by his wife Nicola and their children Luke and Molly, sat down with his parents Janice and Michael to explore potential solutions for safeguarding the farm. The family farm, which spans 100 acres in the Durham hills, was purchased before Matt was born, and both parents expressed deep concerns about its viability following Janice's accident.
Janice suffered an injury when she was knocked down by a flock of sheep, an incident that has prompted a reassessment of their farming practices. "Having my accident has really been quite an eye-opener, I think, for everybody," Janice reflected during the episode. Michael added, "I've had a fear of this happening for years. If this happened in any respect, it could be the end of farming for us."
Proposed Changes to the Sheep Flock
Matt Baker suggested that one possible way to save the farm could be to change their sheep breed. He explained that the Hampshire Downs sheep they have raised for years are large and difficult to handle, making them unsuitable given his parents' current situation. "I just don't think that they are the way forward for you now," Matt said, a point with which Janice quickly agreed, noting, "I agree they aren't the easiest to handle."
When Matt asked if they would consider switching to a different breed more suited to their farm, Janice straightforwardly responded, "Yes, yes, I would." To ease the transition, Matt proposed starting with a smaller breed to help identify the best fit. However, the prospect of saying goodbye to their longtime sheep and choosing a new flock brought Janice to tears, as she struggled to come to terms with the necessary changes.
Emotional Decision-Making Process
Janice confessed, "It's quite a strange feeling, really, sitting here doing this in the sunshine. It's the first time I've actually had to make a decision because of what's happened." Despite the sadness, she acknowledged it was the right choice, stating, "I know it's the right decision, and you reach a time in your life when you think 'I really can't do this anymore'. In that respect, it's sad, but in a good way, a fork in the road might mean good things will come from it in a different way."
The series, which first broadcast in 2021, follows Matt Baker as he helps his parents manage their remote farm after leaving The One Show in 2020. It showcases the personal and practical challenges of maintaining a family farm in today's agricultural landscape.
