Matfen Hall, the luxury Northumberland hotel favoured by Newcastle United, has completed a £50 million transformation that includes a new spa and an on-site golf course. The six-year project has reimagined the Grade II listed country house, making it the county's only five-star hotel.
New spa and golf course unveiled
The Retreat spa is set to open in September, marking the final phase of the transformation. It is double the size of the old spa and features an 18-metre indoor pool beneath a vaulted beamed ceiling, a Jacuzzi Pool, Himalayan Salt Sauna, Traditional Sauna, Aromatherapy Steam Room, Steam Showers, Experience Showers, Sunlight Therapy Room, Red Light Therapy Room, Brass Monkey Ice Baths, and a Hyperbaric Chamber. There are also six treatment rooms, relaxation spaces, and a TechnoGym-equipped gym with Pilates and yoga studios.
The Douglas, an 18-hole golf course, opened earlier this year. It combines nine newly-designed greens with dry-stone walls, natural water hazards, and the River Pont.
Dining and history
Matfen Hall also offers two dining venues: Emerald, a fine dining restaurant and Northumberland's only AA 3-Rosette restaurant, and Cloisters, a seafood, grill, and champagne bar set beneath a glass roof with curved timber structures and brass detailing.
The hotel has hosted Newcastle United hierarchy meetings, including one in May with former manager Eddie Howe, and the Barcelona squad, whose midfielder Gavi remarked: 'It’s like Hogwarts. Are we in Harry Potter? It’s very nice.'
