Seb Reader, 28, moved back in with his mother and sister in January 2026 to save an additional £20,000 for a £30,000 World Cup adventure. He already had £10,000 saved and needed to amass the rest to fund a three-month trip to America to watch England's matches.
Saving Strategy and Budget
By contributing only £350 per month toward household bills instead of paying £1,300 in rent for his flat in Wandsworth, London, Reader saved £950 monthly from his commission as a business development manager. He also eliminated his weekly food shop and trimmed other expenses, enabling him to bank £2,000 each month since January.
His total budget broke down as: accommodation £7,500, match tickets £9,300, food and drink £6,000, local transport £2,000, flights and other travel £3,225, insurance £295, and visa and extras £1,760, totalling £30,080.
Travel and Match Attendance
Reader flew to Chicago on 1 June for solo exploration, then headed to Nashville to meet friend Jack Banton, 28. He watched England's opening fixture in Dallas on 12 June, travelled to Boston for the Ghana match, and flew to New York on 25 June. He has attended every England match since and spent £9,300 on seven tickets, though he has yet to secure a ticket for the final.
He attempted to purchase tickets through the England Travellers Supporters Club and the FIFA ballot but was unsuccessful. Eventually, he obtained them through a contact at a sports marketing agency.
Motivation and Experiences
Reader said: "I had a bit of a tough period in life which pushed me to make the steps needed to get the plan underway. I also felt this year there's an unwavering supporting of England and I do think there's a good chance of us winning it." He added: "I've always had a fascination with Americans and American culture. It's sort of two birds with one stone. Essentially, I've spent my whole life savings for this trip which is £30,000."
Beyond the matches, Reader took a road trip through Nashville, visited Memphis and Graceland, and explored the hot springs of Arkansas. He noted that many Americans he spoke to were unaware the World Cup was happening: "It blew my mind that some people didn't know about a tournament of that size."
Future Plans and Social Media
Reader is considering flying back to the UK to watch the final with friends if he cannot secure a ticket, then returning to the US afterward. He said: "It was a budget set for the trip of £30,000 and I'm right at the budget and final tickets are looking around £10,000 so I don't know. It's all extortionate anyway."
He is documenting his journey on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram under @sebbyscenes, where feedback has been supportive. His girlfriend, currently in a long-distance relationship, plans to join him after the World Cup to continue their travels.
