A salmonella outbreak on the Spanish island of Majorca has affected more than 50 people, including a La Liga footballer. Real Mallorca striker Victor de Baunbag, a Cameroon international, is among those struck by the illness.
The outbreak is believed to be linked to a Japanese restaurant in Palma, the island's capital, which has been closed as a precaution. The first cases were reported last week, according to local newspaper Ultima Hora.
Emergency units have treated several patients with food poisoning symptoms after eating at the restaurant. The Balearic Islands' public health department warns that the number of cases may rise, as some milder cases may not be reported immediately. Local authorities have opened proceedings against the restaurant.
The outbreak follows a listeria epidemic in Andalusia, which affected hundreds. Majorca is a popular destination for British holidaymakers, with thousands visiting each year, particularly resorts like Magaluf and Palma Nova near the capital.
Salmonella causes symptoms such as watery or bloody diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Most patients recover without specific treatment, but severe cases may require hospital care. Proper food storage, cooking, and hygiene are key to prevention.
