Cádiz, perched on a slender strip of land encircled by the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe. New Zealand expat James and his Spanish wife Yoly, who run the YouTube channel @spainrevealed, have named it their "number one place to visit" in Spain, calling it a "crime" to miss.
Why Cádiz Stands Out
James described the city as "the most magical city in Spain," citing its location on an "impossibly small spit of land" and its rich history. He revealed that he has harbored dreams of living there for a period over the years. Yoly echoed his sentiment, stating that skipping Cádiz would be "unforgivable."
History at Every Turn
The city boasts more than 3,000 years of history, with ancient structures visible throughout. James noted, "There's almost a sense that Cádiz has so much history that it can't keep up... all of these historic buildings are being beaten by the weather that comes off the Atlantic." This gives the historic parts "a gritty authenticity."
Ancient structures and narrow streets can be discovered in the city's different quarters, or barrios, including El Pópulo, La Viña, and Santa María. El Pópulo is the most ancient district, dating back to the 13th century, and is considered the genuine medieval heart of the city.
Key Attractions
The seafront promenade offers stunning vistas, including the shimmering golden dome of the cathedral. The Cathedral itself is a renowned landmark blending baroque and neoclassical styles, with guided tours available to overlooked sections like the crypts.
Plaza de las Flores is a charming square surrounded by cafés serving regional specialities such as churros and fried fish, while Mercado Central features stalls offering locally-sourced produce.
Modern Cádiz
While the city's millennia-old heritage forms a significant part of its fabric, Cádiz has also embraced the modern age. The sleek, contemporary Parador de Cádiz opened in 2013, boasting a stunning outdoor swimming pool set against a breathtaking Atlantic backdrop.
