Last-Minute August Bank Holiday Getaways in Welsh Countryside
Last-Minute Welsh Countryside Getaways for August Bank Holiday

With the August bank holiday falling on Monday, August 31, time is running out to squeeze in a last-minute UK getaway before summer comes to an end. Wales offers beautiful countryside and charming towns worth visiting, and several cottages are still available to book on holidaycottages.co.uk.

Dan y Comin: A Base for Outdoor Adventures

For those wanting to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Bannau Brycheiniog, Dan y Comin offers a welcoming countryside base for up to five guests. Set on a smallholding less than half a mile from the River Usk, the cottage is well placed for walking, cycling, fishing and white-water canoeing.

Inside, the detached cottage has a spacious kitchen and dining area with exposed beams and a comfortable lounge centred around a feature fireplace. The cottage can sleep five guests and also accepts up to three dogs. It's worth noting that dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms.

With Brecon just five miles away and the National Park’s International Dark Sky Reserve status, it could also be a great choice for anyone hoping to spend their bank holiday evenings stargazing.

Little Hendre Barn: A Romantic Escape

Couples looking for a peaceful countryside escape could find plenty to love about Little Hendre Barn, which sits on an established farm along the Monmouth to Pandy stretch of the Offa’s Dyke footpath. The single-storey barn sleeps two guests and offers light and spacious open-plan accommodation, complete with exposed beams, a cosy lounge and wood burner.

Its location makes it particularly appealing for an active bank holiday break, with the Offa’s Dyke and Wye Valley Walk nearby for scenic hikes and riverside strolls. Guests can also explore historic White Castle or venture further to Symonds Yat. A couple of visitors flagged up that the cottage is found down a single-track lane.

Ty Nant Llwyd: Remote and Peaceful

If switching off from everyday life and escaping into the countryside sounds like the perfect bank holiday, Ty Nant Llwyd could be the ideal choice. Set in a peaceful and remote position near the top of Llanllwni Mountain, the cottage overlooks Brechfa Forest and is surrounded by open fields, offering far-reaching views and walks straight from the door.

The spacious property sleeps five and has plenty of room to unwind, including a cosy lounge with a wood burner, well-equipped kitchen and dining area, and a bright sunroom with wrap-around windows overlooking the countryside. It was described by a couple of visitors as "dog heaven" but one holidaymaker described it as "a bit remote".

Alternative holidays to book in north Wales include the Enchanting North Wales castle retreat with a spa. Holidaymakers can book a stay on Secret Escapes in the award-winning former royal residence set in a medieval town in North Wales. Also, Luxury Cottages has a wide range of high-end properties to stay in, including the Seaview cottage that overlooks the Menai Strait and Snowdonia. The Seaview is a well-renovated seaside property that features two spacious en-suite bedrooms that can sleep four guests.
