The Strada della Forra, a spectacular mountain road on the western shores of Italy's Lake Garda, has caught the attention of petrolheads due to its incredible views and terrifying narrow passages. Drivers say spotting another car along the route is enough to make them 'want to cry'.
An Intimidating Experience
Dubbed the 'eighth wonder of the world' by Winston Churchill, the road stretches for around 6km (3.7 miles) and even featured in the opening car chase of the 2008 James Bond film Quantum of Solace. In the dramatic scene, Daniel Craig's 007 races through narrow tunnels and cliffside bends while evading villains.
For British drivers, however, it can be an intimidating experience. In several places, the road is only wide enough for one vehicle to pass at a time, meaning motorists often have to reverse into small passing places carved into the mountainside to let oncoming traffic through. With sheer rock on one side and a dramatic drop towards Lake Garda on the other, many visitors admit it's a heart-in-mouth experience whenever another car appears around a blind bend.
Local Expertise and Visitor Feedback
Despite drops of up to 350 metres, locals from the mountain villages tackle the route with ease, making the nerve-racking drive look effortless. The route also passes through the municipality of Tremosine sul Garda, made up of 18 stunning villages, where visitors can stop for food, explore narrow streets and take in panoramic views of the lake.
Sharing their experience on TripAdvisor, one visitor said: 'Fantastic discovery, a horrendous roadway (at certain times only in one direction), from the lake to the mountains.' Another added: 'A beautiful, almost magical place with many little things to discover along the way. Definitely worth the trip.' A third wrote: 'I've driven Pikes Peak and Mt. Washington, and those two roads don't hold a candle to this one. The most tense part is the drive before you actually get to the Strada - very tight turns and narrow lanes.'
A final visitor shared a word of warning: 'The route was really beautiful and interesting, and the views were fantastic. The only flaw is that the road is now one-way (uphill only), so when you reach the top you have to drive at least another 15km of hairpin bends before you can return to your destination. Overall, it was a great experience, but it's definitely not one to rush.'
