Ischia, an island in the Gulf of Naples, has been described as Italy's "best-kept secret" by tourists, offering a cheaper and less crowded alternative to the Amalfi Coast. The island features beautiful villas, spectacular landscapes, and mineral-rich thermal waters used since ancient Greek and Roman times.
Four towns with distinct character
The island comprises four main towns: Ischia Porto, the main arrival point with lively restaurants and shops; Forio, known for sunsets and beaches; Sant'Angelo, a pedestrian-friendly fishing village with an upscale feel; and Lacco Ameno, famous for its mushroom-shaped rock formation.
Affordable accommodation and dining
Unlike Amalfi, Ischia is not dominated by international hotel chains but by independent boutique establishments. Current hotel rates start from around £40–£60 per night, though prices can rise significantly during peak periods, with June averaging approximately £250 per night.
The island also appeared in the 1999 film The Talented Mr Ripley, with a sequence shot at Ristorante da Ciccio, one of its many excellent dining venues.
Visitor praise
One visitor from Wales described Ischia as "beautiful" and said the experience can be summed up as "Sorrento without the noise and bustle and Capri without the rip-off prices." They highlighted attractions including La Mortella Gardens, Ischia's Castle, and Negombo Spa Park. The reviewer added: "It is very stylish and very much a destination for Italians."
