Hickory's Smokehouse has confirmed the opening date for its first Newcastle restaurant, which will take over the former home of a much-loved pub. The American-inspired BBQ chain, which already operates in Gateshead, will open in Benton on Friday, November 13.
The new venue is located at the site of The Newton pub, which has been transformed for the launch. This follows the conversion of The Gold Medal pub in Gateshead, which closed at the end of January and reopened as Hickory's in early June.
Expansion Across the River Tyne
Until earlier this year, the only Hickory's in the North East was in Thornaby, drawing customers from miles around to try its food, which has generated significant buzz on social media. The chain is known for its BBQ dishes, sides, eclectic drinks menu and generous portions, and its arrival in Gateshead in June was met with considerable excitement.
The opening at Chowdene Bank marked the end of an era for The Gold Medal, which had been named in recognition of the sporting achievements of local athletics legend Brendan Foster. After regulars enjoyed a final drink, extensive renovation work began before the doors reopened as Hickory's.
What to Expect at the New Venue
A teaser shared on Facebook for the Benton opening read: "Your brand new smokehouse is on the way...think a new bar, plenty of space for celebrations and get-togethers and of course our fro-creation and movie room for the little ones!"
Popular items on the Hickory's menu include barbecue trays, smash burgers, baby back ribs and large smokehouse platters. The new restaurant will bring these offerings to the other side of the River Tyne, expanding the chain's presence in the region.
