Harlech named one of UK's best weekend breaks

Harlech, a historic town in North Wales, has been named one of the UK's best destinations for a short break, with travel experts praising its "fantastic" attractions and dramatic landscape. The town is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site castle and sits on the edge of Eryri National Park, around a 2.5-hour drive from Liverpool.

Why Harlech stands out

Specialists at small-group tour operator Rabbie's recently highlighted Harlech as one of the UK's finest destinations for a weekend getaway. Hazel Rickett, CEO of the tour operator, said: "Harlech is a fantastic choice for travellers looking for a staycation that feels a little more off the beaten track. Set between the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) and the coast, the town is best known for its impressive UNESCO-listed castle, which overlooks the surrounding countryside and coastline."

Rickett added: "Visitors can explore the historic fortress, enjoy sweeping coastal views and discover the area's peaceful beaches and walking trails. As a quieter alternative to tourist hotspots such as Abersoch, Harlech is an ideal destination for those looking to experience North Wales without the summer crowds."

What to see and do

Beyond the scenery, the town's high street is lined with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. One well-regarded spot is Y Groser Harlech, described as a "food emporium celebrating the best of Welsh produce", offering locally sourced ingredients and freshly baked treats.

On clearer days, Harlech Beach provides golden sands and a place to enjoy the autumn air away from the summer crowds. Visitors are also advised to try Ffordd Pen Llech, an extraordinarily steep street that previously held the Guinness World Record for the steepest street in the world in 2019, before losing the title to Baldwin Street in Dunedin, New Zealand.
