How to Get Nine Days Off Work by Booking Four Days of Annual Leave in August
Get 9 Days Off Work With Just 4 Days of Annual Leave in August

With summer in full swing, many Britons are seeking ways to maximize their time off without exhausting their annual leave. A simple method using the August Bank Holiday can transform just four days of booked leave into a nine-day holiday, according to Chris Jeffery, director at Cofton Holidays.

How the Hack Works

By taking annual leave from Tuesday, September 1 to Friday, September 4, you can enjoy nine consecutive days off if you don't work weekends. The August Bank Holiday on Monday, August 31 provides the initial day off, and the four booked leave days extend through the week, covering the weekend of September 5-6. This yields a total of nine days away from work.

Chris Jeffery explained: "The August Bank Holiday is arguably the most underused date in the British calendar. With a bit of forward planning, it can serve as the perfect anchor for a considerably longer getaway."

Applying the Same Trick to Other Holidays

The same principle applies to the Christmas period. Booking four days of annual leave from December 27 to December 30 can create a break from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day, assuming you don't work bank holidays. Similarly, the May Bank Holidays in 2027 can be leveraged for extended weekends with minimal leave usage.

Cheapest Times to Travel

For those not tied to school holidays, late June and early July offer the best value for UK staycations. Chris Jeffery noted: "Staycation prices are frequently lower than during the peak summer period, roads tend to be far quieter, and tourist hotspots and beaches are noticeably less packed. In some instances, accommodation can come in at roughly half the price of a comparable August stay."

He added: "Early July we've got availability, lower prices and arguably better weather than the height of summer."

Maximizing Your Annual Leave

By strategically planning around bank holidays, you can stretch your annual leave further. Chris Jeffery advises treating bank holidays as an extra day off and using them as an anchor for a longer getaway. With careful planning, a handful of annual leave days can be turned into several mini-breaks throughout the year.
