Frome, a Somerset town with more than 350 listed buildings, is often hailed as a UK 'hidden gem' thanks to its thriving independent shops and winding cobbled lanes. The pretty town stands at around 213 ft above sea level against the rolling hills of Somerset, on uneven hilly ground at the eastern edge of the Mendip Hills.
The River Frome flows through the town, which sits just 13 miles south of Bath. Its sloping cobbled lanes wind around an extensive collection of historic buildings, making it one of the best-preserved towns in the area.
Catherine Hill and historic streets
One of the most famous streets, and the steepest in Frome, is Catherine Hill, where independent shops are housed in historic buildings lining its narrow pathways. The picture-postcard scene has become an iconic landmark, with one visitor hailing it as "one of the best streets for independent shops" and another noting it's "full of character".
More medieval architecture can be found on Cheap Street, which has a labyrinth of independent retailers and cosy coffeehouses, while Gentle Street has preserved houses dating back to the 7th century. The town is believed to have more than 350 listed buildings.
Monthly markets and local traders
The Frome Independent market takes place on the high street on the first Sunday of every month from March through December. It sees more than 250 traders offering handcrafted ceramics, wire sculptures, vintage garments, antiques, homeware, and prints.
The market draws in over 80,000 visitors annually and hosts live music, DJs, street performances, workshops, and various activities. One enthusiast shared on TripAdvisor: "Trendy, funky, full of the world's lovely people stalls' atmosphere and generally the place to be on the first Sunday of the month!"
The market's food selection includes Mexican and Italian-style street food, Lebanese wraps, Japanese dumplings, baklava, churros, and Choux Box, alongside artisan coffees and handcrafted cocktails.
Frome also hosts its Vegan Market on the first weekend of each month, with its Farmers' Market following on the second Saturday of each month.
Arts, heritage, and leisure
Historically rich in wool, textile, metal, and printing sectors, the town now has a thriving arts community with venues such as the Cheese and Grain for live music and Merlin and Memorial for theatrical productions or live comedy. Artwork can be explored at Black Swan Arts and Silk Mill Studios and Galleries, alongside heritage at Frome Museum and Iford Manor.
