The world famous locomotive Flying Scotsman will visit the North East for nearly a month this August, with tickets now on sale for footplate experiences and train rides. The locomotive will be the guest of honour at Locomotion, the railway museum in Shildon, County Durham, from August 2 to 31 as part of the museum's Summer Festival.
Details of the Visit
Visitors can ride behind the Flying Scotsman for half a mile for as little as £5, with free entry for children under 3. Half-hour footplate experiences are also available, allowing passengers to undertake two runs up and down a section of the historic Stockton and Darlington line.
The last time the Flying Scotsman visited the North East, its afternoon in Newcastle was cut short to just minutes due to a lengthy delay at York, disrupting plans for passengers to enjoy the city's Christmas Market. This year's visit aims to provide a smoother experience.
Summer Festival Attractions
The Summer Festival will also feature a replica of Stephenson's Rocket. Tickets for journeys behind it cost £50, traveling past the museum's Main Hall and back towards the historic coal drops. Weekly family activities include LEGO builds, Meccano makes, racing car challenges, and sculpture building. A pop-up beach will offer deck chairs and ice cream for relaxation.
According to Simon Duke, What's On Editor for ChronicleLive, the Flying Scotsman's extended stay provides ample opportunity for enthusiasts and families to experience the iconic locomotive.
