St Agnes, a charming seaside village on the north coast of Cornwall, has been hailed as a hidden gem and traveller's paradise. Nestled within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts stunning beaches, top-tier pubs, and breathtaking coastal walks.
The village is home to several picturesque beaches, including Trevaunance Cove, Chapel Porth, and Porthtowan, which are popular for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. Its rich industrial history is evident in sites like the disused 19th-century tin mine Wheal Coates, and the area's mining heritage remains visible through engine houses and mine shafts.
St Agnes is also known for its vibrant community of independent shops and eateries. The Peterville Inn was previously awarded the title of the UK's best pub by the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence. Visitors also rave about the Chapel Porth Beach Café, famous for its hedgehog ice creams made from cones, clotted cream, and hazelnuts.
The village has gained international recognition through its connection with the BBC series Poldark. Author Winston Graham, who wrote the Poldark series, lived nearby and used the entire parish as inspiration for his books, dubbing it 'Poldark Country'. The iconic chapel at St Agnes Head, emerging from heather and gorse, served as a backdrop for the show.
Other attractions include St Agnes Museum, Perranporth Airfield, and several circular walks such as the Chapel Porth to St Agnes Circular Walk. With its winding lanes, Cornish charm, and panoramic views from St Agnes Beacon, the village continues to captivate visitors.
