Eynsford: A Picturesque Kent Village with Castle and Riverside Pub
Eynsford: Kent Village with Castle and Riverside Pub

Eynsford, a village in Kent's Darent Valley, offers a blend of rural tranquillity and heritage, just 30 minutes from London. With a population of fewer than 2,000, the village attracts ramblers and history enthusiasts with its ancient remains, countryside walks, and a welcoming pub.

A Village Rich in History and Nature

Eynsford's heritage spans more than a millennium. The village is accessible by rail from London in half an hour, with the station about a 10-minute walk from the centre. Visitors can follow the River Darent as it meanders through the settlement.

Rambling is a principal attraction, with the surrounding Darent Valley offering undulating countryside, agricultural land, and autumn forests with waterside and wooded trails. Lullingstone Country Park features over 300 trees, including oak, beech, and sweet chestnut, some believed to be 800 years old. In spring and summer, orchids and wildflowers dot its chalky meadowland, and a visitor centre houses a café, facilities, and a retail outlet.

Exploring Medieval and Roman Remains

Eynsford Castle offers free access to medieval ruins under the stewardship of English Heritage. It is an uncommon early Norman fortification with substantial perimeter walls and residential quarters within its hall, rather than a typical towering keep. The curtain wall dates from between 1085 and 1087. The castle suffered damage during an ownership dispute in 1312 and was abandoned thereafter, though its ruins remain.

Lullingstone Roman Villa, established around AD 100, evolved as successive affluent owners modified it. Visitors can view mosaics, a heated bathing suite, a 'house-church', and reproductions of rare wall paintings, offering insight into how a Roman residence developed over centuries.

Wildlife and Dining

Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation houses approximately 100 birds of prey, plus meerkats, huskies, and reptiles. It offers interactive encounters, from meeting eagles and owls to trekking with alpacas, with all experiences contributing to funding animal care at the centre.

The Plough Inn is a highly regarded gastropub with fires and a riverside garden, known for its Sunday roasts. One Google reviewer said: "We had a fantastic Sunday roast at the pub and were looked after by Steph. The food was absolutely delicious - perfectly cooked meat, crispy roast potatoes, and rich, flavourful gravy. The portions were generous, and everything tasted homemade and hearty. Steph was warm, attentive, and made us feel right at home. We'll definitely be back for another roast soon!"
