Brits Warned Over Viral 'Extreme Day Tripping' Trend That Could Leave Them Stranded

Britons are being urged to think twice before following a viral social media trend that involves taking a city break in under 24 hours. The trend, popularised on TikTok and Instagram, has seen over 2.1 billion posts showcasing whirlwind trips to destinations such as Ibiza, Dublin, Barcelona, Paris and Milan.

Google searches for “extreme day trips abroad from UK” have surged by 367% in the past year, as people seek to maximise adventure, save annual leave and cut costs by skipping pricey hotels. However, experts at Travel Republic have warned that these trips come with real-world risks that could leave travellers stranded, exhausted or facing unexpected costs.

One major risk is being denied return boarding due to intoxication. Airlines have a legal duty not to allow drunk passengers to fly, and airports are cracking down on alcohol consumption. “Travellers who overindulge during a 24-hour trip could find themselves refused boarding and stranded at the airport until they sober up,” the experts said.

Unexpected costs can also mount up quickly. Missed flights, last-minute hotel bookings or emergency transport can wipe out any savings made by skipping accommodation. “What may start as a ‘budget trip’ can end up being more expensive than a traditional weekend break with a hotel,” they added.

Furthermore, the pressure to cram everything into one day can make the experience stressful rather than memorable. Without a base to store bags or freshen up, tired or distracted travellers are more vulnerable to theft, scams or accidents, especially late at night in unfamiliar surroundings.

While the trend may look fun and spontaneous, experts advise booking at least one night's accommodation to ensure a more relaxed and safe trip. As Christmas markets across Europe begin to open, the trend is expected to continue through winter, but travellers are urged to plan carefully to avoid a travel disaster.
