Europe's Best Island Sardinia Rivals Caribbean Without Long-Haul Flight

Sardinia, the Italian island known as the 'Caribbean of Europe', has been named the best island in Europe for 2026 by Travel and Leisure in their World's Best Awards, scoring 91.57. The island offers crystal-clear turquoise waters and pristine white-sand beaches that rival the Caribbean, yet it is only a two-hour-and-45-minute flight from London Stansted, with direct one-way fares starting at £23 to Cagliari.

Weekend Escape to Paradise

Senior Travel Journalist Amy Jones spent a weekend in Sardinia and was captivated by its tranquil, azure waters, which she described as every bit as clear as those in the Maldives. She recalled taking dips in the warm July waters and watching colourful tropical fish glide past. The island, also called 'Sardegna' in Italian, features expansive immaculate beaches set against striking rugged mountains, offering a contrast she loves.

Beaches and Activities

During her three-day trip, Jones stayed near the village of Chia but noted that Sardinia has hundreds of immaculate beaches along its 1,800 km coastline. Beyond the shores, the island offers boat excursions, snorkelling, cycling routes, treks, day trips to seaside towns and the capital Cagliari, ancient archaeological sites, and Italian cuisine with Mediterranean influence. She explored Su Giudeu and Campana Dune beaches, enjoyed a poolside cocktail at Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia, and cycled an e-bike along an ancient Roman road to the historic Chia Tower with coastal views.

Climate and Accessibility

Sardinia reaches a balmy 31°C in July and 28°C in September. While there are no direct flights from Wales, airlines like Ryanair, KLM, and easyJet offer flights with stopovers, keeping total journey time under six hours. Jones recommends the island as a hassle-free alternative to the Caribbean or Maldives.
