Edinburgh Named UK's Most Expensive City for Weekend Break, Beating London
Edinburgh Beats London as UK's Most Expensive Weekend Break City

A recent study by Post Office Travel Money has identified Edinburgh as the United Kingdom's most expensive destination for a two-night weekend break, surpassing even London and Dublin in terms of overall cost. The research, part of the 'City Costs Barometer 2026', analysed the average expenditure for a couple across various holiday essentials, including accommodation, dining, and sightseeing.

Edinburgh's Hefty Price Tag

According to the findings, a two-night trip to Edinburgh for two people amounts to an average of £668.10. This figure is nearly £150 higher than the £527.50 estimated for a similar stay in London, which ranked 34th on the list. The primary driver of Edinburgh's high cost is accommodation, with a three-star hotel averaging £462 for two nights. Other expenses include £3.50 for a cup of coffee, £6 for a bottle of beer, £5.60 for a glass of wine, £118 for a three-course evening meal, and £18 for a sightseeing bus tour.

Edinburgh, known for its iconic castle perched 260 feet above the city, volcanic landscapes, historic landmarks, and cobbled streets, remains a popular choice for tourists despite the expense. It ranked 48th overall among European cities, placing it among the priciest destinations on the continent.

UK Cities in Context

While Cardiff was the cheapest UK city for a weekend break, costing £377.64 for a couple, it still failed to break into the top 20 most affordable European destinations. London, at £527.50, was more expensive than Cardiff but cheaper than Edinburgh. The Post Office's barometer also highlighted the most expensive European cities, with Oslo topping the list at £733.99, followed by Copenhagen (£670.65), Edinburgh (£668.10), Geneva (£644.22), and Barcelona (£641.03). Dublin, the capital of Ireland, was slightly cheaper than Edinburgh at £610.79.

Cheapest European Destinations

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina was the most affordable European city for a two-night break, costing just £248.27. Other budget-friendly options included Bucharest (£258.07), Tirana (£262.85), Belgrade (£265.13), and Trenčín (£271.64). These cities offer significant savings for travellers looking to stretch their pounds further.

Expert Advice

Laura Plunkett, Head of Travel Money at Post Office, commented on the findings: "Despite concerns about rising prices abroad, there are many European cities offering great value for money. Sterling has remained fairly strong, but in these challenging times, it will pay holidaymakers to do their homework before booking to see where their pounds are likely to stretch furthest, even for short breaks."

For those seeking a staycation, Cardiff emerges as the most economical choice within the UK, while Edinburgh, despite its allure, commands a premium that rivals some of the most expensive destinations in Europe.
