A historic market town in the Cotswolds has been named among the top places to visit in the UK for 2026, surpassing overrun tourist hotspots like Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water. Cirencester, often called the 'Capital of the Cotswolds,' secured fifth place on Time Out's list of the best UK destinations for the year.
Why Cirencester Stands Out
Time Out highlighted that while the Cotswolds may seem overvisited, only small portions of the region receive most attention. Cirencester, described as 'often-overlooked,' is praised for being better equipped for tourism than crowded spots like Bibury. The town offers a unique blend of Roman heritage and a vibrant independent shopping scene, particularly in the historic Corn Hall and Arcade.
Attractions and Activities
Visitors can explore Cirencester Park, home to the 9th Earl and Countess Bathurst, a haven for deer and horses. History enthusiasts will enjoy the award-winning Corinium Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Romano-British antiquities, including mosaics, sculptures, and coins. The museum is fully accessible and features a gift shop, café, and visitor information centre.
The town is also known for its stunning historic buildings and characterful pubs. For summer visits, Time Out recommends the Cirencester Open Air Swimming Pool, one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1869.
Other UK Destinations
The list includes other notable UK locations, but Cirencester's recognition highlights its growing appeal as a staycation destination. With its rich history, green spaces, and local charm, the town offers a less crowded alternative to the Cotswolds' more famous villages.
