Castleton, a picturesque village in the heart of the Peak District, offers a perfect base for exploring the national park with minimal planning. The drive in via Winnats Pass, a steep valley with sheep on the tarmac and vibrant green hillsides, sets the scene for a weekend of hiking, cycling, and pub-going.
The village is surrounded by spectacular views, including Mam Tor, a 517-metre-high hill providing 360° views over Edale Valley to Kinder Scout and the Derwent Moors. A steep hike from the village to the top is popular but challenging, especially in 30-degree heat.
Castleton boasts eight pubs along Castleton Road, all within walking distance. The Peak Hotel stood out for its atmosphere, with a friendly landlord serving Aperol and Hugo spritz, and eclectic decor sourced from vintage markets. Ye Olde Nags Head offered hearty pub grub, including stone-baked pizzas. Other pubs include Bulls Head, The Castle, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, The George, The Swiss Tap, and the Peak District's Eccentric Alehouse.
In the village centre, Castleton Coffee Co. provides a modern alternative to traditional cafes, appealing to younger hikers and coffee enthusiasts. The tiny shop serves sourdough sandwiches, home-baked sausage rolls, cakes, cookies, and acai bowls. A bench wraps around the outside, with stools inside, and they sell merchandise like tote bags and locally sourced flavoured peanut butter.
Beyond food and drink, Castleton is a must-visit for foodies, with its quintessential stone buildings and Peveril Castle overlooking the village. The high concentration of pubs and the coffee shop make it an ideal destination for a low-effort weekend away.
