Cabin on Welsh Cliff Offers All Four Seasons in One Weekend
Cabin on Welsh Cliff: All Four Seasons in One Weekend

Summer has arrived, making it the perfect time to explore Wales' breathtaking coastline. My partner and I, along with our mischievous dog Pippin, drove four hours from the Gwent Valleys to the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd, seeking sunshine and relaxation. We booked a charming cabin perched on a cliff near Aberdaron, ideal for a peaceful retreat. With an early summer heatwave preceding our trip, prospects looked bright. But as often happens, Welsh weather humbled us.

Arrival in Fog

As we traveled north, fog descended. Upon reaching the cabin above Traeth Aberdaron, we could barely make out the sea. The scene was dramatic, and the neighboring St Hywyn's Churchyard felt especially atmospheric during a brief walk with Pippin. However, the next morning brought a complete transformation.

Clear Skies and Beach Fun

We woke to clear blue skies and a magnificent view across the bay to two islands: Ynys Gwylan Fawr and Ynys Gwylan-bach (Big and Little Seagull Islands). We headed to the beach, just minutes from our Airbnb. It was Pippin's first proper beach experience, and he joyfully tore across the sand, though he refused to join me in the water. True to British form, I got sunburnt almost immediately.

Weather Turns Again

After a splendid day on the beach and exploring the area, another surprise awaited. The next morning, overcast skies and gale-force winds howled ferociously. While venturing out for Pippin's walk, I spotted hardy souls heading for a swim in wetsuits, but I quickly retreated to the cabin. We spent a snug day listening to the wind and waves, rounding it off with fish and chips.

A Perfect Getaway

One day of sunshine followed by a cozy retreat is my ideal escape. The unpredictable weather actually enhanced the experience, though my new binoculars saw little use. The following morning, we packed up, browsed gift shops in Aberdaron, and headed home. Pack everything from sun cream to waterproofs, and the spectacular Llŷn Peninsula comes highly recommended.
