British tourists heading to Greece this summer have been warned to expect significant flight delays, as the country's airports top the list for waiting times, according to new analysis by AirAdvisor's flight intelligence platform.
Research Highlights Disruption-Prone Greek Airports
The study measured the proportion of flights delayed by 60 minutes or more between June and September 2025. Seven popular Greek holiday hotspots—Kefalonia, Corfu, Rhodes, Zakynthos, Chania, Kos, and Mykonos—feature among the 20 worst-affected destinations. Kefalonia recorded 11.79% of flights to UK airports delayed by over an hour.
Although Milan Bergamo in Italy topped the list at 11.96%, Greece was identified as the most disruption-prone country overall. The delays are partly attributed to the nation's immense popularity with British and global tourists, combined with many airports operating as small hubs at full capacity.
CEO Explains Domino Effect
Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, stated: "Our research found that Greece is by some distance the most disruption-prone country for UK air passengers. Seven of the twenty most disrupted destinations for holidays from the UK to Europe are Greek islands, which might not come as a surprise to frequent travellers to these airports." He added that when mass disruption occurs, a domino effect can push back flights across a single day, leading to higher delay rates, especially during peak periods.
Compensation Rights for Delayed Passengers
Under UK government rules, if a flight is delayed by more than three hours or cancelled, passengers may be entitled to compensation. The amount varies based on delay length and flight distance.
