A British traveller's search for a taste of home in Thailand has gone viral after he declared a Bangkok pub's Sunday roast 'like a pub roast dinner back home'. Sam Meaney, who said he 'hadn't had a proper roast dinner in six months', visited The Old English pub in Bangkok's Thonglor district to satisfy his craving.
The pub, with its dark wood panelling and snug interior, serves British classics including a Sunday roast, fish and chips, and a 'Churchill Breakfast'. Sam opted for the roast beef at 495THB (£11) and upgraded to the Sunday Special for an extra 50 baht, which included leek soup and chocolate cake.
Sam documented his experience on Instagram, where he praised the soup as 'banging' and the roast beef as 'medium rare' and impressive. While he conceded the broccoli was 'probably out of a bag', he was delighted with the carrots and red cabbage, and initially doubted the roast potatoes but later found them crisp.
Delivering his verdict, Sam said: 'It's not the most expensive roast in Bangkok, you get what you pay for, but it's like a pub roast dinner back home. I'm a happy boy.' He added that the chocolate cake pudding was 'sweet, chocolate-y and hot'.
The clip amassed over 1,400 likes, with one viewer commenting: 'That looked pretty banging to be fair, if you said you was at a pub for Sunday roast in UK I wouldn't have challenged it.' Another said it 'looks better than a lot of roasts in the UK'. A previous customer said they had 'had a few meals there, all top quality'.
