A British expat in Spain was disappointed after ordering a large portion of fish and chips, describing the fish as 'tasteless' and the batter as 'greasy'. Mark Danby, originally from Stockport, Greater Manchester, now lives in Manilva, Malaga, on the Costa del Sol.
Danby, who runs the YouTube channel Tapas Guy, visited a local chippy called Marlows in CC Los Hidalgos and ordered a large cod and chips for €16.95 (around £14.65). When the meal arrived, he noted the 'humongous' size, which included two fish fillets.
However, upon tasting, Danby was unimpressed. He described the chips as 'a little bit greasy', 'not crispy', and 'a bit soggy'. The cod was also 'greasy', and he said the fish was 'absolutely tasteless' and the batter 'tasteless'. He added that the fish 'doesn't hold the flakiness' and 'kind of just mushes together'.
Despite his initial criticism, Danby later softened his opinion, giving the meal a score of seven or possibly eight out of ten. He noted the quantity and price were 'pretty good value', and he praised the tartar sauce as 'very nice'. He also acknowledged that the fryer might have played a part in the quality.
